Search engine marketing is the practice of advertising or publicizing your website through search engines, like Google, Yahoo or MSN. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) may contain one or more of the following:
• Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Search engine optimization is an implementation of techniques to maximize your rankings in organic search results, or natural. Organic search results are ranked web pages returned by search engine when searching for a word or phrase specific – “keyword” or “phrase.”
• Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC) – ads you place for your website with a search engine like Google or Yahoo. You bid the amount you are willing to pay per click. The more you bid, the higher your ad will appear in search engine results. Google AdWords has implemented additional factor when ranking ads that is based on the relevance or importance that Google places on your site, and it is very difficult to maneuver. You can also use pay per click advertising to your advantage on your site. For example, you can make money with Google AdSense and other similar programs.
• payment for inclusion (PFI) – In addition to search engines, like Google, Yahoo and MSN Search, there are many directories on the Internet. These libraries may be general in nature or related to a particular topic. You can get free listings in some online directories, like DMOZ, but most libraries now charge for listing.
